Description

The Norfolk Sites and Monuments Record: a card index of sites and finds which was accompanied by 6-inch (1:10,560) Ordnance Survey maps used to record locations and supplementary files containing drawings, photographs, and notes. The index is organized by unique site number. This index is based on the Norwich Castle Museum Record Cards (see SNF87254-SNF87263) begun around 1933, which were organized by archaeological period and parish. This new card set and new system of numbering was begun in 1974 when the Norfolk Archaeological Unit (NAU) was established at Gressenhall. It was continued by NAU staff until 1984, when the record was computerised with funding from English Heritage and RCHME. During this time the archaeological records for the City of Norwich were maintained separately by staff at the Norwich Castle Museum (SNF87213).
