Summary

The course of a post medieval road depicted on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk can be traced variously in modern hedge lines, as field boundaries depicted on historical Ordnance Survey maps, and as cropmarks and low earthworks visible on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. The course of the road is recorded between a point between Burnham Thorpe rectory and North Creake Abbey in the north and Waterden in South Creake in the south. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, the earthwork element of the road (part of NHER 70090) probably still survives.

Map

October 1977. Visit by E. Rose (NAU).
Old track marked by field boundaries, on (S1) and from [1]. Where it passes East Park Wood it is ploughed out but is visible as a cropmark. The south end of the road has been ploughed out, but is marked by a row of pylons. From TF 8782 3603 a tall and very old hedgerow takes up the course.
E. Rose (NAU) 5 October 1977.

South of TF 8651 3799 the hedgerow is still old, but not as old as further south. North of here the line ceases to follow the hedgerow and there is not a trace of it.
E. Rose (NAU) 7 October 1977.

Shown on (S2) as 'Old Burnham Road Stopped Up'.
E. Rose (NAU) 2 February 1987.

BKS aerial photograph from vertical survey of Norfolk shows course as cropmark from TF 8632 3830 to TF 8709 3712.
D. Edwards (NAU) 3 March 1988

29 July 1996. NLA aerial photography (S4).
Cropmarks of road visible. In addition to this there are cropmarks showing at TF 872 368 that suggest pits (eight or more). The origin of these pits is uncertain, but they are located alongside and running parallel to the road cropmark and could be connected to its construction (as quarrying pits for road materials). The pits have been recorded under NHER 36149.
H. Clare (NLA) 2 May 2001.
Amended H. Hamilton (HES), 24 June 2014.

2000. Field Observation and Desk-based Assessment.
Site visited and considered as part of archaeological assessment of Holkham Estate.
Former track, petering out into arable field.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 28 April 2015.

April 2026. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
The course of the post medieval road described above is visible variously within the project area as modern and historic field boundaries, and between TF 8582 8396 and TF 8630 3832 as cropmarks and earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. The cropmark and earthwork sections have been recorded individually as NHER 70090, NHER 70089 and as part of NHER 13062; see those records for details, including information about related Sources. The remaining sections of the course of the road, for the most part visible as field boundaries on modern and historical Ordnance Survey maps, have not been mapped, but the Monument Polygon defining the site has been updated to reflect what appears to be more accurate locational information, where this is available. Note that both the northernmost and southernmost sections of the site lie outside of the project area and have not been examined in detail.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 17 April 2026.
