Full Description
Road on (S1).
Ordnance Survey marks site as 'Brancaster Lane' origin of name?
E. Rose (NAU).
December 1993.
[1] reports that the south edge of the wood called Spoil Bank is marked by sunken way flanked by ditches. This is likely
to be the true course of Brancaster Lane. The area was called Brancaster Common.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 17 January 1994.
January 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
An earthwork ditch, which may relate to a previously recorded (see above) section of sunken medieval road known as Brancaster Lane, is seen as on visualised lidar data (S2). The alignment of the road is also visible on the Tithe map (S3) and the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6" map (S4). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the earthworks still survive. Sections of earthwork bank can be seen to the north of the sunken road on S1. It is possible that the mapped sections of bank may relate to the sunken road or possibly to a post medieval boundary. However, it is also possible that the sections of bank could relate to modern features.
J. Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 15 January 2024.
