Summary

This timber-framed wattle and daub house is of 16th century date. There is a very large central chimney stack to serve the 19th century fireplace, although numerous traces of earlier fireplaces have been noted. One of the most interesting features is a spiral staircase in the north stack which rises to the attic and forks around the stack. In each corner of house on upper floor are a pair of 'upside-down' arched braces in the walls. All of the roof timbers were replaced in the 1930s but the original mullioned windows were retained despite repair work.

3 January 1980. Visited by E. Rose (NAU).
This house is of 16th century date. It is constructed of a timber frame and wattle and daub. It stands two storeys high with attics and has an east-to-west alignment. There is a very large central chimney stack; on west side behind 19th century fireplace part of the stone jamb of an original fireplace has been revealed, surrounded by 16th century brickwork. Wall painting claimed here by builder seems to be merely plaster markings etc). Possible traces of old fireplace on first floor. On the south side stack there is a passage on the ground floor, now blocked off as cupboard, and a corresponding small room above with square niches in side of chimney. The north side stack is spiral staircase rising through both floors to attic where it forks to pass each side of the stack - an interesting feature. The late staircase in the east part of the house, from after it was divided into two cottages. In each corner of house on upper floor are a pair of 'upside-down' arched braces in the walls. Original blocked window in centre of west gable, and others retaining angled mullions have been uncovered in the north wall during repairs. All of the roof timbers were replaced in the 1930s. Date of house probably 16th century; indcations are that upper floor is original and that it was not a hall-house. At east end is a brick extension constructed in about 1800, with fireplace whose lintel is a reused beam?; later brick extensions on west.

Under restoration.
