Full Description
January 1986. Hales Survey, Heckingham site 25.
Good conditions, lightly shot cereal.
Context 1 = whole field. Two strips then rewalked. These are labelled Context 2 and Context 3. See (S1) for locations.
Context 1.
Eighteen flints: twelve flakes, some with crude retouch; five scrapers, one proximal end of long retouched blade ?leaf point or sickle blade? Identified by J.J. Wymer (NAU).
One upright rim and one body sherd of grogged hand made Iron Age or Early Saxon.
One body sherd organic tempered Iron age or Early Saxon.
Two body sherds sandy Iron Age or Early Saxon.
One late Roman red slipped.
One Roman flagon.
Eighteen Roman greyware.
Twenty two medieval unglazed.
Eighteen post medieval, predominantly glazed red earthenware.
George II 1/2d 1718.
Context 2.
Seven flints: five flakes, one small rounded scraper, one thick end scraper.
One scrap hand made Iron Age or Early Saxon.
Twenty three Roman greyware.
Thirty three medieval unglazed.
Four glazed red earthenware.
Two Westerwald.
Context 3.
Four Roman greyware.
Two medieval unglazed.
One unidentified.

This area has been interpreted as Roman settlement. Few finds, none dateable.

The possible Early Saxon sherds here may indicate this is an area of Early Saxon occupation. An Iron Age date is more likely.
