Full Description
1983 or before.
Lead sealing.
Irregular piece of lead, maximum diameter 30mm, with circular impression on obverse showing an animal, probably a griffin, running right (diameter 16mm).
Reverse is blank but string hole is clearly to be seen.
Leaden sealings were often used on pakages.
The findspot suggests that our sealing may have been made during the 3rd century when Burgh Castle was a flourishing military station.
See (S1).
E. Rose (NAU) 12 February 1986.
