Summary

During 1966 and 1969 a brick clamp located here was excavated. It was felt to probably date to the 18th-19th century although 16th-17th century brick fragments were found in the ploughsoil nearby. A flint track and hollow way were also found by this work and assumed to be contemporary with the clamp.

Map

March 1966 and January 1969. Immediately southwest of Church Farm. Brick clamp excavated by K. Wade and D. Smith in 1969 after located by fieldwork 1966.
Probably 18th-19th century though 16th-17th century brick found in ploughsoil. Flint track and hollow way also found.
N. B. The published accounts (S1) brief note and (S2) main reference, are misleading in that the grid references are slightly inaccurate. The field numbers are totally wrong.
The clamp is stated to be in 'field 104' which is in fact the number of a road some distance away and the other structures in 'field 106 to the north' though this field is some way to the west.
The above grid reference is obtained from the Fig.1a in the main reference, which seems to place the clamp in field 110.
The description confirms this.
This site was formerly confused with NHER 5391.
E. Rose (NAU) 7 July 1981.

The confusion of over field numbers is explained by the preliminary report (S3) (faint photocopy in file under NHER 5391). The final report has confused the Ordnance Survey field numbers with the tithe award map field numbers. The kiln, as suggested above, is in the OS field 110 at above grid reference. 'Field 106 to the north' is the adjoining field to the north-north-east as now indicated on NHER map.
