Summary

A trackway depicted on Ormesby Tithe Map is visible as a cropmark and soilmark on aerial photographs. It forms a pair with a parallel boundary (NHER 8669) 180m to its south, which is also depicted on the 19th century map. The relationship of both these features with the surrounding pattern of narrow, sinuous fields suggests that they represent the enclosure of what may have once been medieval strip fields.

December 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The linear cropmark described above is a trackway, flanked by ditches, visible as a soilmark and cropmark on aerial photographs (S2)-(S5), between TG 5064 1519 and TG 5124 1514. (The photo reference given above appears to be an error; it almost certainly refers to (S3)). The track is depicted on Ormesby Tithe Map (S5), indicating that it was extant in the 19th century. The same map depicts the surrounding fields as sinuous and narrow, reminiscent of medieval strip fields. Together with a parallel boundary 180m to its south (NHER 8669), the trackway described here probably reflects the (post medieval?) enclosure of the earlier agricultural landscape.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 21 December 2005.
