Summary

This site was recorded by the Ordnance Survey as a medieval moat, but the channels are actually part of a natural stream.

Location

Civil Parish EAST RUDHAM, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

Moat shown by Ordnance Survey, who presumably have some documentary evidence for this, as feature is simply a right angled bend in a fast flowing stream joining the infant River Wensum.
Said to have been deepened by JCB in December 1977.
Fragments of pantile and brick in side.
E. Rose (NAU) 20 February 1978.

(S1) in fact shows the River Wensum as making a loop around the south side of Workhouse Yard (shown by red line on GIS), including this stretch, and not bypassing on north as now, which makes a more convincing moat.

May 2004. Desk-based Assessmemt.
This survey suggests that features thought to indicate a medieval moated site are more likely channels of the braided stream that runs through this low common meadow. The manorial history of East Rudham also points to this conclusion, with ecclesiastical owners rather than secular, making a moated site within the village itself less likely.
See report (S2) for further details.
A. Cattermole (NLA), 23 June 2005.
