Full Description
1976.
Cropmark of what appears to be an old field boundary possibly incorporating part of a moat.
Possibly site of hall that preceded the Old Hall?
See (S1).
E. Rose (NAU), 10 January 1978.
1996.
Site expanded to include ditched enclosures to north, adjacent to east edge of NHER 6029 and on south edge of lower lying fen/common. Pottery found noted below, all but one sherd to north and northwest of original site.
Pottery north of boundary:
One base and five body sherds of unglazed medieval.
One glazed Grimston body sherd.
One thin, off white, with thick brown external glazed, ?medieval import.
Pottery south of boundary:
One rim, one base and seven body sherds of unglazed medieval.
One late medieval/transitional.
Three roof tile, probably early post medieval.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NLA).
B. Cushion (NLA), August 1996.
September 2012. Norfolk NMP.
The centre of the site has been altered from TL 9952 8672 to TL 9952 8679 due to the NMP mapping.
Several earthwork ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S2-S5), the most substantial of which may represent a medieval moated site, centred on TL 9953 8670, and measuring a minimum of 55m by 37m internally, although it is difficult to be certain of this, as many of the earthworks in the area appear to have been re-used or adapted for post medieval drainage of the land. It may be possible that this is also the site of the former Old Hall as stated above, although since the later (post 1490) build was reported to have been to the ‘west of Old Hall Lane’ (S1), some 400m to the west, it is difficult to be certain of this. A small (18m by 18m) further possible earthwork enclosure is visible to the east, centred on TL 9962 8672, but this is only visible on one set of later photographs (S6), and it is possible that it represents a post medieval drainage feature.
E. Bales (NMP), 05 September 2012.
