Full Description
9 August 1985. High Street, outside Aldiss Court. Under west gutter between roadway and pavement.
Cavity opened up; described in (S1) as 'flint lined well and room sized cavern' but described by Breckland District Council (from whom came location) as 'apparent well 6.3m (7 feet) deep'. Backfilled. Was this really a well, or some sort of old manhole etc.? If it was, does this indicate that the High Street does not, as assumed, follow the medieval course but was straightened after the fire of 1580 or that of 1679?
E. Rose (NAU), 13 August 1985.
August 2002. Gas pipe trench dug along east side of carriageway.
Revealed no trace of this feature, or of any other disturbance. This suggests the feature belonged to a house protruding into the street from the west side.
E. Rose (NLA), 2 August 2002.
In 1973 in Wimbledon beneath the floor of the Well House in Arthur Road a 12 foot square room, entered only by a narrow shaft in the ceiling. In the floor of the room was a well, 563 feet in depth, known to have been dug in 1798 but closed within 12 years because of silting. The Science Museum was unable to suggest any function or reason for the room. The similarity of this report with the features reported at this site suggests a similar function or origin, whatever that may have been.
E. Rose (NLA), April 2008.
