1951. Excavation.
A small excavation was conducted by G. Knocker following discovery of a large quantity of Late Saxon pottery while digging a rubbish pit in the garden. Limited investigation of the area recorded a clay floor at a depth of 3 ft 6 in below the ground surface. The floor exhibited signs of burning, and a hearth and burnt wattle-impressed daub were identified. Knocker also observed traces of earlier occupation which had been sealed beneath the floor, but no details of these remains have been recorded. It remains unclear whether the pottery collected from the site was found above or below the floor, or both. However, the pottery assemblage included wasters which indicates pottery production nearby, perhaps from the kilns recorded in 1948 and 1949 at NHER 5847.
See (S1) for further details.
E. Rose (NAU) 5 December 1984.
Updated H. Hamilton (NLA), 21 August 2008.
