Map

5 May 1981. Observation at construction site.
Examination of foundation trenches did not reveal any archaeological finds or features either in section or on the stripped soil surface. Contractors reported that the site had been metal detected, but no finds were recovered. As the base of the topsoil was not reached in a trial hole excavated by contractors to a depth of 2.5m, it was suggested that soil may have been dumped here during construction of the council estates. However, this remains uncertain.

May 1981. Field observation during construction.
Late Saxon and early medieval sherds were found on spoilheaps along with a fragment of decorated bone.
Observation of footing trenches showed 1m-1.2m of dark loam with ephemeral stratigraphy over natural sand.
A. Gregory now believes the 2.5m dep trial hole was probably was dug in a large hollow filled with NCC highways debris at the northeast end of site.
