Summary

A Bronze Age round barrow, part of a group of barrows known as the 'Seven Hills'. The barrow is shown as part of this group on a map of 1740.

Map

Round barrow.
South side of Euston Road at highest point.
Site used as an airfield in World War One, and as a bombing range in World War Two.
Oval or elliptical ringed 36m by 31m, circumference 102m.
1.4m high from bottom of ditch.
Elder bush.

On an esker described by old writers as a camp.
(S1) called it 'A tumulus now a warren, about it appeared a small entrenchment'.

L. V. Grinsell (NCM) measured ditch 3.6m across; plus mound, 31m; plus other ditch, 34m.
2.2m high, ditch 30cm deep.

R. R. Clarke (NCM) probed ditch for another foot.
Suggestion of outer bank.
Gorse and alder bushes.
Not marked on 1st edition OS 1838, see (S2).

Visited by H. D. Hewitt (NCM) 29 September 1905.
Measured by J. W. R. Middleton (NCM) in 1918.
Marked on (S3) at Thetford Museum.

Small excavation on west side about about 5.4m from centre.

The barrow described above was not possible to discern on the available aerial photographs, probably due to its possible location within an area of several undulations, covered by a low level of scrub, although a series of linear earthworks were visible to the south, and have been recorded as NHER 54552.
