Full Description
Undated. 'Large glazed pot found in barrel'.
Written on KLM 6 inch map.
E. Rose (NAU), 23 July 1980.
1986.
In note to D. Gurney (NAU), informant describes this as 'Large green glaze Croc of about 1700. I found a piece of pot rim in mud left by a dragline cleaning out the dyke. I made a dam further upstream and found the rest of the Croc sitting upright in a wooden box 2.4m (8 feet) down from surface level, the wood soon dried and broke up.
The Croc is in KLM 104.968. There was also a wicker basket. Too rotten to move'.
One presumes that Croc is meant to signify pot.
The grid reference given is 'TF 691? 4203'.
The spot as marked on KLM map does not seem to be on a dyke, unless it is a roadside ditch, and the location may perhaps be further southwest on the stream from Mill Waters.
E. Rose (NAU), 3 December 1986.
KLM accession book has 'Just inside drive gate to Park at Gipsy Green, 20 to 30cm (8 to 12 inches) deep with part of wooden tub, after dykes dredged to 1.8m (6 feet) winter 1966-7'.
Suggests grid reference should be perhaps TF 6909 4225.
