Summary

A 16th century map shows a series of mounds existed in this area. The same document mistakenly referred to these mounds as 'Black Hills' (which are actually NHER 8480). In any case an examination of the wood in modern times found no traces of the mounds and they do not seem to show up on aerial photographs of the area that were taken by the RAF in 1946. The date of the mounds is unknown but if they are not natural features they may be Bronze Age.

Map

In area of modern wood called Stone Brake. Map of 1589 in NCM marks mounds (barrows?) here and calls them 'Black Hills'. The mounds now known as Black Hills (NHER 8480) are marked as Brente Hills on the 1589 map.

April 1989. Wood examined as far as possible due to dense undergrowth.
No trace of any mounds seen. Geology of area means that natural mounds would not be unexpected.
J. J. Wymer (NAU) 18 April 1989.

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
An earthwork round barrow previously recorded at this location was not visible on any aerial photographs examined during the Norfolk National Mapping Programme. However, it is possible that the earthwork was obscured by trees, even on the 1946 RAF photographs.
J. Albone (NMP) 11 October 2006
