Cropmarks of two double ring ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S11). These central grid reference for these cropmarks has been amended from TG 2980 1990 to TG 3000 1982. The large circular enclosure and curvilinear feature referred to above are now recorded separately as NHER 49176-7.
The first of the two double ring ditches is centred on TG 2996 1986. The outer ditch is 2.5m wide and sub-circular in plan with an external diameter of 41m. The inner ditch, which is 3m wide, also has a sub-circular plan and a 28m diameter. The second double ring ditch is also sub-circular in plan and lies 110m to the southeast at TG 3004 1978. The outer ditch measures up to 3.5m wide and has an external diameter of 38m. The inner ditch, which is up to 4m wide, has a diameter of 23m. This ring ditch cropmark is cut by a gas pipeline on most of the available aerial photographs.
It is likely that both of these ring ditches are of Bronze Age date and that they relate to round barrows. They are located on an area of relatively flat ground at approximately 11m OD. These two ring ditches are positioned 90m to the southeast of a large circular enclosure or ring ditch cropmark (NHER 49176). Together these three monuments appear to lie on the same northwest to southeast axis. Both of the ring ditches are crossed by north to south aligned linear ditch cropmarks which are possibly medieval field boundaries (NHER 49183).
J. Albone (NMP), 07 December 2006
