Summary

This is the site of Shouldham Priory. It was established in about 1190 for Gilbertine monks and nuns and was dissolved in 1538. The ruins were removed in part during 1840 when stained glass, a stone coffin and a skull in a vessel were found. Since this time the site has been subject to numerous investigations, excavations and photographic surveys. This work has shown that the present Abbey Farm house sits over the nave of the Priory church and incorporates several blocks of medieval ashlar. It is also apparent that the majority of the earthworks lie to the south of the building and consist of quite complex water channels, rectangular enclosures and fishponds. As one would expect, a great variety of finds have been recovered from the Priory including medieval stone coffins, a medieval page turner, a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age arrowhead, a Roman coin hoard and numerous pottery sherds from various periods. A Middle Bronze Age cremation cemetery, remnants of an undated road, a Roman kiln, a post-medieval well and post-medieval houses have also been uncovered here. See NHER 67264 for objects recovered during meta-detecting in this area between 2009 and 2019.
