Full Description
Around 1970. Stray Find.
Found at unknown location by [1]:
1 Upper Palaeolithic flint dihedral burin of rare form. Made from an Early Upper Palaeolithic blade leaf point. See drawing (S1).
Initially identified and photographed by A. Rosenfeld (British Museum). Although according to (S2) the British Museum offered to buy this piece it was later donated to the Norwich Castle Museum, where it is now part of a collection of material recovered by [1] in the Drayton/Hellesdon area (NWHCM : 2001.227). Subsequently examined and described by R. Jacobi (BM); see copy of report in file. This blade point is noted in (S3) and (S4) and is the object from "Drayton" mapped in (S5). For a similar object see (S6). See file for note received from John Pipani (Manchester University), which includes photographs taken by NCM.
Although this object was almost certainly recovered in the Drayton/Hellesdon area its exact provenance remains unclear. One possibility is that it was found in the finder's garden in Hellesdon (NHER 7859); although a previous suggestion that it is the same object as a possible broken handaxe reportedly found here in 7866 would appear to be incorrect. It is more likely that it was found in a nearby field in Drayton - where a range of other Upper Palaeolithic flints were subsequently recovered by [1] (NHER 20472).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 4 June 2014.
