November 2018. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of work to upgrade the electricity supply to St Peter's Church and install a new water supply.
The trenches dug between the church and the south entrance to the churchyard generally didn’t reached the base of the mixed 'churchyard soils', with natural sands and gravels only encountered at one location (just to the south of the porch, at a depth of c.0.75m). Only one in situ burial was encountered, which was partially revealed immediately to the south-west of the porch. The exposed bones were carefully excavated and then later reburied in the trench by a church official.
Finds were limited to a single modern coin.
See report (S3) for further details. See also photographic archive (S4).
The remainder of the archive from this work has been given to Yaxham PCC and will be stored at the church.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 August 2024.
