Summary

Fieldwalking at this location in 1991 and 1997 recovered Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman box flue and roof tile fragments; possible Roman window glass and post-medieval clay tobacco pipe stems. Disctinct concentrations of Roman and medieval material were identified, both of which are thought to be indicative of settlements. Metal-detecting between 1983 and 2023 has recovered prehistoric working flints; Roman, Late Saxon and medieval pottery sherds; Roman tile fragments; Late Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons; post-medieval tokens and a range of other, Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include Bronze Age rapier fragments; an Iron Age linch pin; Roman brooches, terrets, a belt fitting, knife or razor blade, surgical implement, spatula-like object, ring key, lock pin, furniture mount, furniture knob, fragment of Mercury figurine, copper alloy stud and gold openwork finger ring; a potentially Roman copper alloy pin; an Early/Middle Saxon vessel mount; a Middle/Late Saxon strap end; a Late Saxon brooch and strap end; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval keys, a thimble, horse harness mount, mount or horse-harness pendant, suspension unit from lamp or censer, furniture stud, box mount, casket key and copper and lead seal matrices (including a blank for a seal matrix) and lead ampulla; a medieval/post-medieval thimble, thimble or sewing ring, coin weight, possible sword-belt fitting, copper alloy vessel fragments and lead trade weight; post-medieval spurs, book clasps, a thimble, casket key, purse bar, copper alloy stud, tap key, lead weights and lead cloth seal and a post-medieval/modern finger-ring pipe tamper.

Identified by V. Fryer. Post medieval cast bronze open work button with integral attachment loop. Possibly gilded, cast in two pieces and joined around centre. A very fine example. 17th century.
