NHER 11100 (Monument record) - Site of Hawker's Hall, Redenhall with Harleston

Site of Hawker's Hall, a moat listed as an OS antiquity.
Depicted on (S1) as a circular moat, not wooded, with entrance on south. Separate north to south waterfilled feature to east also marked as 'moat' on (S2).

October 1982. Site visit. OS survey still basically correct.
The north to south linear pond is wider and waterfilled at its south end, but for the rest of its course is little more than an overgrown ditch. A forest nursery has been established between this and the main moat, so no original features are inside. The circular moat still has an entrance causeway in the south side and another opposite in the north.
This seems to have impeded the water flow so that the western side is waterfilled but the eastern side only boggy.
The ditches are wide and where dry around 2.5m deep.

The northwest corner is wider than the rest, and on the island's northwest corner is a large linear mound around 10m high from water, folowing edge of moat. Remainder of island flattish though disturbed, now overgrown with trees less than a centry old and nettles. Small pond outside south-west corner is not connected to moat. General impression is almost like a small motte and bailey.

Mound destroyed, north to south linear pond infilled, probably with spoil from mound. He doubts whether this was a motte and bailey, the mound probably being spoil from the ditch.

October 2004. Site visit.
West and south west ditches wet, others dry. Whole area densely wooded. Some felling may be undertaken on the Estate in rotation, but no work planned in next five years.
