Summary

An aerial photograph taken prior to 1980 records a tiny rectangular cropmark at this location. Investigation of the site found that the cropmark related to a well-preserved small barrow, although the ditch and outer bank were obscured on the south side by a hollow way. The barrow was scheduled in 1994 as an Iron Age monument, and intriguingly it lies within the scheduled area of the priory.

Map

Pre September 1980. Ordnance Survey aerial photograph.
Tiny rectangular cropmark (10m square) with mark in the middle.
See 6in and 1:2500 overlays.
J. Bown (NAU) 1 October 1980.

Found to be a well preserved small barrow in pasture on brow of hill facing river Nar to the north.
13m diameter, 0.60m high, ditch 3m wide, 0.20m deep, outer bank 3m wide, 0.20m high.
Both ditch and outer bank obscured on south side by hollow way which infringed on barrow.
J. J. Wymer (NAU) 9 December 1988.

The hollow way mentioned, which appears on the aerial photograph, joins with a linear bank about 1m high running north-south along the edge of the field, parallel with a bridle path. Is this a recent boundary, or does it have some connection with the lands of the priory.
E. Rose (NLA) 24 February 1992.

Yes, it is the priory precinct wall, so the barrow interestingly lies within it. See NHER 3881.
E. Rose (NLA) 18 November 1993.

Scheduled 1994 as Iron Age barrow; within scheduled area of priory.

1994. Earthwork Survey.
See report (S1) for plan and further details. This site was included in (S2) and the survey is also noted in (S4).
P. Watkins (HES), 16 February 2014.

See (S4) which suggests that this is in fact a ritual rabbit warren, meant as a symbol of resurrection.
E. Rose (NLA) 22 February 1999.
