Full Description
'Enclosure' claimed on St Joseph's list of air photographs at this very approximate grid reference.
Large double-ditched rectilinear enclosure, with internal subdivisions, of probable Roman date. Possible similarities to the nearby Fring enclosure (NHER 1659). Interpretation by D. Gurney (HES).
Observed on Google Earth image dated 7 January 2006 (S1) and reported by [1].
A. Beckham (HES), 20 March 2014.
September 2024. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
The cropmarks of a rectilinear enclosure and associated boundary ditches (see above), of an unknown but probable Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs (S2-S4). The date of the features is unknown. However, the form of the feature may suggest a Roman date for the enclosure. The linear features within the enclosure may relate to internal subdivisions. The ditch feature centred at TF 7222 3016 may relate to a Roman boundary ditch associated with the enclosure. However, it is also possible that the feature could be natural in origin. The cropmarks of geological features are also visible across the area on S2-S4. The CUCAP aerial photograph discussed above (see above) was not available to the project at time of recording. The cropmarks at this site can be seen to overlap with the earthworks of possible medieval to post medieval furlong boundaries (NHER 68564 and 68565) . On the basis of the consulted sources, it is not possible to discern the stratigraphic relationship between the two sites, and the digital mapping reflects only that the sites overlap, not their chronological relationship. The monument polygon has also been updated to the extent of the feature as seen on S2.
J. Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 03 September 2024.
