Summary

Gardening here during 1983 recovered sherds of Roman and medieval pottery along with a possible loom weight. Subsequent excavations in 1985-86 found further sherds of Iron Age, Roman and post medieval pottery, possibly as a result of dumping in the last century. Pottery types identified from this site included medieval Grimston Ware, Roman Nene Valley Colour-Coated Ware an post medieval lead glazed earthenware.

1983. Found by grandson digging hole.
Late 1st/early 2nd century pottery fragments; lump of fired clay - possibly a loom weight. Also green glazed Grimston Ware, late medieval glazed sherd.

1985-1986. Excavations on site of 1983 discovery by [1], [2] and [3]. Area around 5m square stripped, central part dug to 0.8m. Layers of brown sand-loam and orange sand seen.
One area contained large quantities of Roman pottery and 17th-19th century sherds. All sherds large with fresh breaks.
1st-2nd century jars, dog-dishes and two sherds belonging to 3rd century Nene valley colour-coated beakers
Appears to be fairly recent tipping from mixture of Roman and post medieval material. Probably within last one hundred years.
In situ Roman material from swimming pool site (6140) but [1] says no soil was dumped here when swimming pool dug.

1985-1986.
Further pottery from same excavation, but not previously seen.
Large amount, mainly Roman but includes Glazed Grimston and post medieval sherds. Also at least ten Iron Age sandy and quartz gritted ware sherds.

1991 and before. Further finds from gardening.
Lots of Roman sherds and mortarium rim with stamp MATUGENUS FECIT (rubbing NCM).
1st-2nd century ring-necked buff flagon with single handle.
Very fine greyware sherd with barbotine dots.
3rd-4th century Nene valley colourcoated beaker base.
Single handled flagon rim in red fabric wite white slip.
Very large beaker in grey fabric, orangy surface slip - unusual.
Wide mouthed greyware jars and round bowl- slightly micaceous with burnished line 2nd-3rd century.
Blue-green glass flagon.
Late green glazed Grimston sherd and Lead glazed earthenware sherds.
