Full Description
9 June 1980. NAU air photography.
Positive cropmark.
1 ring ditch.
D. Edwards (NAU) 28 July 1982.
October 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A cropmark of a ring ditch, possibly a Bronze Age round barrow, is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The grid reference of this cropmark has been amended from TG 4895 1475 to TG 4892 1471. The ring ditch is slightly sub-circular in plan with a narrow ditch and an external diameter of 22m. It is probably that it is of Bronze Age date and that it relates to a round barrow. Cropmarks of four possible pits or graves are visible within the ring ditch. Three of these are sub-rectangular in plan and measure up to 3m by 1.5m. The fourth pit is sub-circular and has a diameter of up to 3m. The ring ditch is crossed by cropmarks of later linear features. These include field or property boundaries of probable medieval to post medieval date (NHER 18320). The continuation of these ditches across the central area of the ring ditch indicates that that any mound that may have originally been present had been levelled by the time they were dug. This probable round barrow is located at approximately 12m OD on the northeast-facing side of a low ridge. It lies within a dispersed group of at least six ring ditches. The closest of these are located 140m to the southwest (NHER 42048), 270m to the north (NHER 42050), and 280m to the northeast (NHER 42049). It forms a linear alignment with those located to its southwest and northeast.
J. Albone (NMP), 12 October 2005.
August 2014. Geophysical Survey.
A magnetometer survey of this field identified no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with this ring ditch.
See report (S4) and NHER 64678 for further details.
