NHER 18164 (Monument record) - Neolithic flint-working site

Spring 1978. Along ridge just below crest for 200m on drilled surface.
Prolific flint scatter (for similar see Ringland) of factory waste. Including two roughouts and one small pick.
Also two rims medieval coarse ware.

2 June 1982. Along north-west edge of Old Wood, to New Plantation. Compare sites NHER 13927 and NHER 9658 nearby. Found in fieldwalking. Finder's site 328.

May 1985. Stray Find.
Found within flint working site towards east end:
1 Neolithic fragmentary flaked flint axe or pick. Broken in antiquity, cutting end missing. Competently flaked with no trace of grinding. Patinated blue to white. Fresh break at butt end shows flint to be good quality pale grey/brown. See drawing (S1).

30 January 1989. Further fieldwork. Ploughed field.
Concentrated area around 3x15m. 51 flakes, mainly patinated. Neolithic debitage.

Worked flints recovered from 'humps left by the quarries' which rise from the pit floor, at about 1m high, apparently representing a buried 'factory' floor.
Waste flakes (post-Mesolithic) and two blades (probably Neolithic) suggesting knapping or habitation site.

March 1994. Examination of site by P. Robins (NCM) resulted in recovery of much Neolithic debitage and confirmed identification as Neolithic flintworking site.

Long narrow flake in pale green flint, mottled patina on dorsal face, broken at distal end. Much edge damage. Pointed flake with thick butt, retouched down bnoth lateral edges. Probably a projectile point. Small side struck flake of irregular triangular shape, unmodified. Not diagnostic but could be Neolithic from Neolithic site.
