(S2) reports that in 1850 the land upon which St John's Terrace stands was sold by Richard Bagge to William Salmon Rolin. The poor rate records indicate that Rolin completed and let Nos 1-4 at the western end in 1851 and Nos. 10-14 in 1852. The middle section, Nos. 5-9 were not built until 1853-4 and this is marked by a slight forward projection and a change in balcony decoration. See (S2) for further information.
(S3) notes that this terrace was built in response to the opening of the railway station in 1844. (S3) suggests a slightly earlier date of construction, proposing that Nos. 1-9 were built by 1846 and the rest around 1850, but it is unclear how this conclusion has been reached.
