Summary

Various prehistoric objects known to have been found during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the Caistor St Edmund area, but with no additional information regarding provenance. These finds include a Mesolithic or later quartzite pebble macehead and Neolithic worked flints.

Various prehistoric objects known to have been found during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the Caistor St Edmund area, but with no additional information regarding provenance.

FINDS IN THE NORWICH CASTLE MUSEUM

The Norwich Castle Museum Fitch Collection includes a holds a broken, circular perforated quartzite macehead that was found in 1853 (NWHCM : 1894.76.836). This find is noted in (S1). Information from (S2). This probably what would now be described as a pebble macehead. These objects are not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts.

OTHER RECORDED FINDS

Caistor St Edmund is listed in (S3) as one of the locations that had produced Neolithic worked flints of "Boulder Clay" type prior to 1907. The objects were found by W. G. Clarke, G. Rye and G. F. Steward. Previously recorded as NHER 9785.

Found at "Caistor St Edmund Hall":
1 prehistoric blade-like flake.
Identified by J. J. Wymer (NAU), see note in file. It is unclear whether the recorded provenance is a reference to Caistor Hall (NHER 9817) or Caistor Old Hall (NHER 9853).
