Summary

A Palaeolithic flint handaxe was found in the yard of Street Farm in 1977. It it possible that it was found close to its original context (as the farmyard was previously a gravel and chalk quarry), although it may have been imported from a pit across the road.

Map

April 1977. Stray Find.
Found in farmyard:
1 Palaeolithic large flint "Acheulean" handaxe, plano convex. See drawing (S1).
May be in original context as farmyard was formerly a gravel and chalk quarry, but gravel in which it was found is more likely to have come from a second pit across the road.
Identified and compiled by A. J. Lawson (NAU). Information from (S2).

This object was subsequently described by J. J. Wymer on (S3) and in (S4) as a large elongated ovate handaxe (Wymer type GK), 21.5cm long, in sharp condition with incipient frost cracks. It is also noted in (S5) and (S6), although no additional information is given.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 May 2014.
