Summary

A medieval parish church, with a 12th century round tower and walls which contain a large amount of reused Roman material, probably from the nearby Roman town, see NHER 1124. Parts of the church were rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries, and the church was restored in the late 19th century.

The oldest part of the church is the west end which contains much Roman stonework and tile. See (S1).
12th century round tower, possibly added to older west wall.
Chancel about 1310.
Nave rebuilt and former south aisle and south chapel added in 14th century.
North vestry 15th century, now demolished.
Top of tower remade in early 16th century.
Aisle taken into nave at unknown date.
South chapel demolished in about 1800; overall restoration in 1870.
Fine collection of late medieval and early post medieval monumental brasses.
