Summary

Fieldwalking and metal detecting at this site between 1979 and 1999 recovered a wide range of artefacts. These include around 2000 Roman pottery sherds, a Bronze Age axehead decorated with chevrons, an Early/Middle Saxon hanging bowl, post medieval jetton.

Context 2 (centred on grid reference [2]). One hours fieldwalking over large patch of dark soil about 100m x 50m:
Around 2000 Roman sherds including Nene valley coarse colour-coated ware, grey ware and mortaria; South Midlands shell-gritted ware; Spanish globular amphora sherds, 2nd century Gaulish Samian, three tile fragments, lead pot-mend (latter found with metal detector).

Bronze Age flat axe decorated with chevrons. Drawing (S1) in file.
Small bronze brooch in form of man on horseback, traces of red and green enamel.
Also two sherds colour-coated ware, one plain Samian, one greyware.

18 February 1988. Systematic Fieldwalking Survey.
Fenland fieldwalking. Good conditions, weathered ploughsoil.
Context 1: from fieldwalking whole field, only one flint collected as curiosity for identification (SRY AK).
Context 3 (at location [4]) and overlapping Context 2: concentration of Roman pottery, moderate, few fragments fired clay, possibly Roman brick, some bone collected, one calcined flint noted. Set in grey soil but pottery spreads beyond. Grey soil on low mound no more than 0.4m high and generally less.
