Summary

An excavation along the route of the A47 bypass before it was constructed revealed a pit filled with burnt and unburnt clay and charcoal. A small area at the base was fired red. Two flint flakes were found in the fill. Fragments of prehistoric pot came from the disturbed area above the pit.

May 1976. Excavation
Work on line of bypass revealed a pit cutting the natural clay with flints. It was filled with burnt and unburnt clay, charcoal and ashy loam. A small area at the base was fired red. Two flint flakes were found in the fill. Minute fragments of prehistoric pot came from disturbed area above the pit. A soil sample has been kept for flotation. Workers reported seeing other similar features along this eastern end of the bypass route. Pit roughly circular. Diameter 1.40m. Depth 0.40m.
