Summary

The remains of a possible brick kiln, consisting of broken tiles, bricks and fired kiln lining, were noted during works in 1981.

Summer 1981. Found in digging trench with JCB. Close to hedge in meadow.
60 to 90cm (2 to 3 feet) deep in 'typical dark meadow soil', spread 7 to 9m (8 to 10 yards long.
Much red tile, broken (not kept).
Grey brick waster probably partially fired, pebble and flint temper.
One very hard piece of kiln lining with green-blue glaze as often found in coal-fired kilns due to heat turning sandy brick lining to glass.
Suggested remnants of brick kiln.

White's 1845 Directory (S1) lists three bricklayers but no brickmakers.
B. Yates (Rural Life Museum) suggests an estate kiln.
P. Wade-Martins (NAU) knows of no records of kiln.
