Summary

This is the site of a vast grain warehouse known as No. 3 warehouse which was built on the eastern edge of Bentinck Dock in 1883. Grain was transferred to the warehouse using large hydraulic cranes, and moved around inside the warehouse on a complex system of moving belts, elevators and trolleys. The warehouse was demolished in 1973.

Map

1973. Building Survey.
1883, of brown brick with white brick heads to doors and windows. Six storeys and a basement. It has a slated roof built in two parallel ridges.
The building is divided into twelve by seven bays by broad buttresses or piers. The window frames are all of cast iron.
The warehouse was used for the storage of imported grain. Power for the machinery was supplied by a hydraulic engine which also worked all other installations at this dock. A complex system of moving belts, elevators and trolleys enabled the dispersal of grain around the building and allowed different consignments of grain to be kept separate.
See (S1) for further information.
RCHME, 1973, amended A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 29 November 2018.

Although (S1) has the detailed account of grain importation, and the photographs confirm the same building is the subject, (S2) in file states that from 1917-1923 the warehouse belonged to the British Farina Mills who processed potatoes, and also used horse chestnuts to manufacture cordite.
The building was demolished following the RCHME survey in 1973.
E. Rose (NLA), 26 September 2006.

(S2) refers to a six-storey warehouse on Alexandra Dock rather than Bentinck Dock so it seems unlikely that this building was in fact a cordite factory.
A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 29 November 2019.
