Summary

Fieldwalking, metal detecting and evaluation from 1984 to 2001 recovered a range of medieval and post medieval objects, including pottery fragments from both periods, (some of it in concentrations suggestive of settlement), a medieval pilgrim bottle and jetton, and a complete post medieval stoneware vessel, together with a post medieval coin, button, bells and a toy.

In winter wheat (site KLY AA).
Context 2 at [1].
Few sherds early post medieval pot, plus bone etc. Set in dark stained soil in raised area of silt, possibly a roddon. About 55m northwest by 20m plus.

Few scraps medieval pottery in small group in southwest corner of field consisting of six sherds (one glazed, five coarse) in area 15m diameter. KLY

Abundant spread of post medieval debris at least 60m north to south by 40m. Within this some late medieval pottery. Cereal too high. KYL aerial photography. NCM (context 3-4).

Medieval pottery concentration moderate to abundant, sparse shell and only occasional bone fragment. Very lttle post medieval material. Set in grey soil beside old bank beside Nar. 31m north to south by 25m east to west.

Mound projecting from old bank beside Nar.
Few medieval sherds and some shell on south side. 55m east to west by 30m north to south by 1m high. KLY 9.

January 2001. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation at Hardwick Narrows Industrial Estate revealed only limited archaeological evidence. A single undated curvilinear feature was the only feature identified suggesting recent deep ploughing had removed any archaeological remains present. Finds recovered included a complete post-medieval bellarmine vessel containing a tar-based substance (possibly votive?).

January 2001. Metal detecting.
Medieval lead ampulla. Missing its open end and with stubs of one side loop surviving. On both faces a six-petalled flower within a circle. A little unusual in having the same device repeated. Possibly Walsingham, see Spencer 1980. Finder's no. 41. (Finder's no. 8).
