Full Description
Very substantial brick and flint foundations mechanically removed during improvement of meadow land. At least 60cm (2 feet) thick. No plan recovered. Remains of walls dumped in gravel pit at [1]. Bricks were post medieval, perhaps 18th century - none kept.
A. Rogerson (NAU) September 1976.
13 October 1977. Visit.
Drilled ploughsoil showed area approximately 75m east to west by 40m north to south with numerous soil changes, dark occupation areas of clay, rubble, burning, etc. Many sherds including stoneware suggest date of 1450 to 1550; a few earlier medieval coarse sherds. Much ironwork, especially horseshoes, of which two kept. Part of limestone mortar, base of copper alloy colander. Bricks in gravel pit are deep pink-red, moulded?, measuring 22.5cm x 10.5cm x 6cm, so perhaps 16th century.
Landowner's finds are Context 1. A. Rogerson's (NAU) are Context 2.
The medieval fat skimmer is now held by the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2003.24.22).
A. Rogerson (NAU), October 1977. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 26 February 2014.
Before 29 December 1998. Metal detecting.

1 medieval coin, 1 pottery sherd, a buckle, half a mirror case, thimble, copper alloy ring of uncertain function, copper alloy vessel fragment with projection in the shape of a women's head and lead ampulla.
Medieval/post-mediueval buckle.
