Summary

This was the site of a small medieval settlement which declined from the late medieval period into the post medieval period. Fieldwalking and metal detecting have recovered two Middle Saxon brooches, a Middle Saxon pin, medieval metal finds including a 13th century buckle and medieval and post medieval pottery.

March to April 1990. On north half of site on green edge.
Copper alloy brooch fragment, lug on reverse, cast ribbed and ring and dot decoration ?Middle Saxon.

Rim of early medieval ware (11th century) ginger jar with stamped decoration, large sub irregular shaped stamps with 20 roughly squared depressions divided by 3 vertical and 4 horizontal bars.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NAU).
Middle Saxon copper alloy pin with facetted head.
Middle Saxon copper alloy ansate 'caterpillar' brooch, 'V'-shaped motifs on circular terminals with rims of single transverse lug and trace of catchplate.

December 1990 to January 1991. Found with metal detecting.
Copper alloy 13th century buckle with expanded tongue rest (compare with Norwich Castle).

(S1) records this as Site 4, a small strip of medieval settlement. The settlement was in pronounced decline by the early post medieval period.
