Full Description
Winter 1984 to 1985. Hales sites 158.
Fieldwalking on gravelly soils close to flood plain of Chet. Sugar beet apparently cleared by folded sheep.
6 sherds pimply Ipswich.
1 base, 5 sherds sandy Ipswich.
2 Middle Saxon local sandy sherds.
2 jar rims 1 flat base Thetford type.
50 medieval unglazed including some early medieval rims and probably some Thetford type sherds.
1 medieval glazed.
1 late medieval/Trans-ish with applied strip.
8 glazed red earthenware.
1 Staffs combed slip.
2 late stoneware.

(S1) identifies this as a Middle Saxon settlement site that continued to be occupied into the medieval period. The site is close to a road and river crossing which may explain the continuity of occupation on this site, unlike other Middle Saxon sites in Loddon. The site was apparently abandoned by the late medieval period.
