Summary

At some time prior to May 1900 a copper alloy vessel was dug up in the grounds of Elmham House. This was originally identifed as pre-Roman, but a more recent examination of a surviving sketch suggested it was more likely to be medieval or post-medieval.

Pre May 1900. Stray Find.
Found in the ground of Elmham Park, North Elmham:
1 copper alloy vessel. This object was exhibited by Nina Layard at a meeting of the Society of Antiquaries on 17 May 1900. It was recorded that it had found "2 or 3 feet [60-90cm] from the surface" and that "The character of the vessel would point to its being of pre-Roman date". See (S1), which includes a basic sketch of the object - see copy in file. Information from (S2).

E. B. Green (NCM) subsequently described the illustration in (S1) as showing a bronze vessel; sheet or cast? With knobs or rivets, escutcheons with ?scalloped edges for ?handle, rim rolled over; about 10cm (4 inches) across. Very difficult to date from figure, probably medieval or post medieval may not even be British.

E. Rose (NAU), 1 May 1987. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 13 August 2014.
