Full Description
Site of hospital for Lepers of St Lazarus, on bridge. Founded before 1146, dissolved possibly 16th century? Dependant on Burton Lazars. Later became a Quaker hall until succeeded by NHER 12036. No trace in present Chapel Bridge, which is 18th or early 19th century brick.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 6 December 1978.
Drawing of 'The chapel on the bridge near Wymondham' in (S1). Bridge is shown with three pointed arches, made of brick or small stones. Above these is a large building with a small pointed window, base of larger square one above. Another pointed window in far wall - gable wall missing - large gap where door had been. This would be around 1730.
E. Rose (NAU).
Also a watermill here recorded by Dugdale - information from Fiona McDonald, UEA.
E. Rose (NAU).
Stone and flint foundations of chapel revealed below road surface in base of parapets in 1986. [1]
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 25 November 1986.
Site visited by E.Rose 12 December 1997 when under restoration. Scaffolding beneath bridge and around it. Bricks have horizontal skintlings (post 1780) and are joined with lime mortar partly replaced by cement. Now grouted and steel cables inserted. No traces of stonework mentioned in 1986; perhaps this is beneath the abutments.
E. Rose (NLA), 15 December 1997.
However, (S2) queries if this ever was a leper house saying the above information is due to a mistake by Blomefield concerning land held by Burton Lazars connected with Chosely.
E. Rose (NLA), 23 April 2007.
