Summary

The octagonal base of an old brick column stands in front of the ruins of 20th century building here. The base may belong to an icehouse, or alternatively be part of a sundial or other garden feature. A visit to the site in 1983 also recorded a fishpond to the west of this structure.

Map

9 December 1975. Visit by E. Rose (NAU).
Icehouse. The octagonal base of an old brick column is probably all that remains of this, in front of the ruins of a post-war military building.
E. Rose (NAU) 9 December 1975.

Revisited 30 March 1983.
No trace found of icehouse where indicated by Ordnance Survey. Column base mentioned above still exists, old bricks cemented to stone plinth - more likely to have been some sort of garden sundial etc. Ruins of building may in fact be pre-war but are certainly 20th century. Fishpond to west, with sloping sides of brick courses, resembles base of an icehouse but is too far west and in wrong situation.
E. Rose (NAU) 14 April 1983.

A copy of the 1904 25in Ordnance Survey map has now been consulted. This shows the word 'ice-house' written against two circular structures immediately north of a rectangular block which must be the building referred to above, and which is therefore probably a late 19th century garden 'alcove'. There are no traces of any features now where the circular structures are marked. The column base and the pond to the west are both marked as 'fountains' and so have no connection.
