NHER 8249 (Building record) - St Mary's Church, East Ruston

A very isolated church in a striking setting, consisting of a west tower, nave, chancel, south aisle and south porch. Construction is of flint and stone with some brick, with the roof being part tiled and part leaded. There was a north aisle, but this was removed in 1778, and the north nave wall replaced with brick. The building is mainly 14th century, the south porch being added in the 15th century when the church was updated. The west tower once had a spire, which was almost unique in east Norfolk at the time. There were further alterations in the 19th century, but by 1980, the church was redundant. However, it is understood that the Redundant Churches Trust has undertaken restoration work. Inside, there is an unusual decorated 15th century font, much restored in 1887, and a fine rood screen.
