Full Description
June 1983. Fieldwalking and metal-detecting.
In area about 200m north-south and 100m east-west:
Good thick scatter of flints. Mainly flakes, with a few rather amorphous retouched pieces of Late Neolithic/Bronze Age type. Identifiable tools included:
1 Mesolithic/Early Neolithic single-platform flint blade core (single platform).
1 Neolithic slender polished flint axehead with convex butt and cutting edge, 1
part-polished flint axehead fragment, and 1 oblique arrowhead.
Also dozens of sherds, looking remarkably fresh, of 13th-14th century pottery. Mostly unglazed but with some Grimston green-glaze.
Flints identified by F. Healy (NAU) and pottery by A. Rogerson (NAU).
See (S1). These discoveries were reported in (S2). All finds were subsequently donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1998.363.3).
A. Gregory (NAU), 6 July 1983. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 11 March 2014.
Pre September 2012.
Found at approximately TG 268 153:
6 undatable prehistoric flint blacks.
2 Mesolithic flint blades cores (1 single platform and 1 two platform) and 3 blades (with evidence of core preparation).
1 undatable burnt flint.
These objects were brought to the Norwich Castle Museum and identified by P. Robins (NCM) in September 2012. See descriptions in file. The parish was incorrectly recorded as Spixworth (assuming that the grid reference given is correct).
P. Watkins (HES), 11 March 2014.
