Full Description
July 1977. Field observation.
A visit to the site observed a small cottage, primarily of 19th century construction but with areas of chequered brickwork which likely date to the 16th century. However, there is much 19th century imitation of such brickwork in the area. The large walled area to east possibly falls into this latter category. The house has clampirons in the form of spears transfixing hearts.
E. Rose (NAU) 13 July 1977.
Aptil 1983. Documentary Research.
It was observed that Faden's Map of Norfolk (S1) depicts the walled area to the east of the cottage as the site of the Hall. The brickwork of the garden wall may therefore be of earlier construction rather than later imitation.
E. Rose (NAU) April 1983.
April 1983.
It was discovered that a modern house had been built inside the walled area. NAU had not been informed.
E. Rose (NAU) 14 April 1983.
October 1983. Communication with builder.
Discussion with the builder of the modern house revealed that foundations had been found in the northeast corner of the site, but apparently only of garden sheds. The builder believes this was a walled garden and the hall stood outside.
E. Rose (NLA) 27 October 1983.
August 2006. Observation.
E. Rose noted in passing that the walled garden has diagonal skintlings (likely pre 1770), a massive cornice and other features indicating a 17th century date. The small cottage mentioned to one side was not examined on this occasion but appears to sit in an outer compartment of the walled area.
E. Rose (NLA), 29 August 2006.
