Summary

Fieldwalking at this location in 1982 and 1987 identified an extensive scatter of Roman pottery that appeared to extend into the land to the north. Smaller quantities of Iron Age and medieval pottery were also recovered, along with a few prehistoric worked flints. Metal-detecting between 1986 and 2023 has recovered additional Roman and medieval pottery sherds; Late Iron Age, Roman and medieval coins; medieval to post-medieval jettons and a range of other, Roman to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include an undatable partly molten unidentified copper alloy object; a Roman snakes-head bracelet and seal box lid; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval gilt binding strip from a casket, harness mount, purse bar fragment and copper alloy and lead seal matrices; medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragments and a post-medieval sword-belt hanger, harness mount, spur fragment and coin weight.

Map

11 November 1982. Systematic Fieldwalking Survey.
Fenland Survey fieldwalking.

In area centred [1] (Context 1):
Field surface scatter. No concentrations.
Few flints.
Medieval sherds.

A water-filled pit shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1) at [2] is now infilled. A circular patch of Roman sherds at this location is apparently due to filling with soil from NHER 4282 to the north [3]. This pit and the associated Roman sherds were previously recorded as NHER 18540.

In north-west corner of field, within area at [4] measuring 50m east-to-west and 30m north-to-south:
Large concentration of predominantly Roman sherds, probably from kilns at NHER 4282.
Also some Iron Age and medieval pottery.
Previously recorded as NHER 4255 Context 7.

In north-west corner of field at [5]:
Concentration of Roman pottery including Samian, adjacent to concentration at [4] but seemingly not joined to it.
Also some medieval sherds.
Previously recorded as NHER 4255 Context 8.

Identified and compiled by R. Silvester (NAU), 11 November 1982.
For full details of wares, flint types etc. see Fenland Folders.
Some of the material found in 1982 was subsequently re-identified as Roman pottery and one Iron Age sherd plus medieval roofing tile.
Information from record cards (S2) and file notes (S3).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 31 August 2023.

Autumn 1986. Metal-detecting.
Found north-east of angle of footpath from Church Road, at approximately [6]:
Roman copper alloy snakes head bracelet of 1st- to 2nd-century date, one third missing.
Details from finder [7].
Identified by A. Gregory (NAU).
Compiled by A. Rogerson (NAU) January 1987. Information from record card (S2).
Previously recorded as NHER 23322.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 31 August 2023.

October 1987. Systematic Fieldwalking Survey
Further fieldwalking in north-west corner of field as part of Fenland Survey.
The concentrations of Roman pottery observed at [4] and [5] were shown to actually be part of a large scatter extending into the area of NHERs 4282 and 4252. All sherds recovered are Nar Valley, except for one Nene Valley sherd (only rim and decorated sherds collected).
Total dimensions of all three sites 420m north-east to south-west and less than 170m north-west to south-east. Much of material on top and side of low ridge of predominantly sandy loam and gravel.
Also occasional medieval sherds.
Information from file notes (S3).
