Summary

In the 1930s several human skeletons were discovered in the garden of the Old Rectory. It is possible that they are related to the nearby churchyard, though they were not dated.

Location

Civil Parish THURLTON, SOUTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

1930s. Found during excavations of garden.
Several human skeletons.
Information from finder who was certain that they were on the far side of the rectory from the church. Rectory was built in 1846. If original churchyard extended this far southwest of church it was unusually large - was there ever another church?
Information came via present owner of Old Rectory (name unknown) in telephone call to NCM.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 10 May 1985.

February 1986.
Excavations to west of present churchyard for new rectory footings produced no finds, clean sand below topsoil - so if there was older graveyard it did not extend in this direction; though trenches were very narrow.
P. W. Williams, 21 February 1986.
