Summary

Aerial photography shows the cropmarks of a probably medieval double moated enclosure associated with a trackway and a pond. The probable moat is also visible as a very low earthwork on visualised lidar data from a survey flown on 2021. It is equally possible that the suggested moat and trackway relate to a medieval stock enclosure and associated boundary ditches rather than a moated site.

Map

Cropmarks possibly of double moated site (associated with pond and drove still remaining) and field system predating present one.
Located by E. Rose (NAU), 11 January 1978.

Drove ploughed out.
Area of double moat to northwest showed only as very slight depression in snow covered ploughed field, which would normally not be visible. The square pond on Ordnance Survey map is sunk deep in the ground resembling an old pit but for the unusual regular shape.
E. Rose (NAU), 30 November 1978.
Nothing on tithe map, though pond there.
Map of 1776 shows that field system cropmarks were existing fields then, and road is part of a road that joined the present lane to east by the cemetery. The moat? Is not shown. Map at Norfolk Records Office, not catalogued.

January 2026. HER Enhancement: Forestry Commission Project K.
The low earthworks of the possible medieval moat are visible on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2021 (S2). The feature is centred at approximately TG 0079 0149 and is also visible as cropmark on aerial photographs from 2006 (S3) and 2019 (S4). It is equally possible that the suggested moat and trackway (discussed above) relate to a medieval stock enclosure and associated boundary ditches rather than a moated site.
J. Powell (Norfolk County Council Environment Service), 22 January 2026
