March 2004. Trial Trenching. Contexts 1-8.
Evaluation of site of proposed extension on north side church.
A small pit filled with crushed mortar was found, but contained no datable evidence. The pit appears to have had no direct relationship with the construction of the church.
Pieces of a large and highly decorated medieval armorial floor tile were recovered, depicting the arms of Morley impaling Despenser. The date of the tile is uncertain, the arms date to the 15th century.
See report (S3). The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
An identical medieval armorial floor tile to that recovered during this evaluation was recorded at HER 8517 in 1995.
