Full Description
Various prehistoric objects known to have been recovered in Cromer during the late 19th century and early 20th century, but with little additional information regarding provenance.
FINDS IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM
It is noted by (S1) that the British Museum holds unprovenanced Mesolithic worked flints from Cromers. These finds were unregistered at the time (S1) was created, but are probably a collection of "flints debitage" donated by S. H. Warren and now categorised in the museum's records as “Upper Palaeolithic/Mesolithic (2011,8114.863). The provenance of these finds is particularly uncertain as they are marked “Cromer (incl Roman Camp)”. The site known as ‘Roman Camp’ lies in the adjacent parish of Runton (NHER 6387).
According to (S2) the British Museum Sturge Collection includes a Neolithic flint blade and a flake from Cromer. Information from (S3). The blade is probably the broken flint blade now categorised as "Upper Palaeolithic/Mesolithic (2011, 8109.1433; Collection No 1406). The present location of the flake is unclear.
Previously recorded as NHER 6442.
FINDS IN OTHER MUSEUMS
The Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology holds an unprovenanced Mesolithic flint core from Cromer (Z15461). This find is listed in (S4) and described in (S5) as a two-platform blade core.
Previously recorded as NHER 13320.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 27 June 2014.
